Summary College of Engineering, Mathematics & Physical Sciences The post is available immediately, on a 2-year fixed term basis. Summary of the role/position This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work as the KTP Associate on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the University of Exeter and Prismatic Ltd. Prismatic make, design, develop and manufacture (at low volumes) high-altitude unmanned and autonomous vehicles for the aerospace and space domain, taking products to the proven prototype stage. This is a novel technology project involving the development of a slow-flying new High Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) solar-powered unmanned air vehicle (UAV). The role of the Aircraft Control Systems Engineer will be to lead the algorithm development and refinement of the control software to be used to fly the aircraft. Applicants will have an aeronautical/aircraft/aerospace engineering, or physics/maths background, preferably with a masters' level qualification in the subject or a very good first degree. They must also be a self-starter, have confidence in their own abilities, be happy to work alone and as part of an embedded team and have excellent communications skills. Familiarity and confidence in using spreadsheets, MATLAB and/or other scientific software packages is essential. The Associate must also have an aptitude for, and show an interest in, the commercial aspects of the work being undertaken, be able to demonstrate an initial understanding of the political aspects of the project and the drivers for customer engagement and eventual market uptake. Interest in aircraft and experience through hobbies (including drone or model aircraft flying, glider or private aircraft flying) and a certain degree of hands-on practical engineering skills (mechanical or electronics) are all desirable. Experience and confidence in writing algorithmic software in C or Python (for example) would be useful. The Associate will, however, be provided support and guidance in any of these areas where they are inexperienced. The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Exeter, but will be based at the company premises in Alton, Hampshire.
