The Trust provides acute services to Swindon and the surrounding areas (catchment 344,000) and community services in addition to Wiltshire (catchment 750,000). The Haematology Department is part of the Thames Valley Cancer Network. There are 6 haematology consultants, two specialty doctors, one clinical fellow and two trainees (ST3-7) and a dedicated haematology/oncology in patient ward supported by a trainee (GPVTS ST1-4). The department provides BCSH level 2B care (leukaemia induction, lymphoma salvage and primary CNS lymphoma chemotherapy) and is JACIE accredited for its autologous stem cell transplant programme. There are shared outpatient and day ward facilities. The department is well supported by clinical nurse specialists in haematology, as well as anticoagulant and transfusion practitioners.. There are both local and network wide (video-conferenced) multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and new and follow up haematology clinics, a chemotherapy clinic and two bone marrow lists each week. Allogeneic transplants are managed in conjunction with University College Hospital, London. If desired, the postholder has the opportunity to attend outpatient allogeneic transplant clinics in Oxford as well as spending time observing inpatient allogeneic transplant work at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. There is a CPA accredited automated combined blood sciences and transfusion laboratory. The post holder will work in a team of five registrar grade doctors to support the haematology service, covering haematology inpatients, the day unit, outpatient clinics and the haematology laboratory. Attendance at haematology MDTs including disease specific, specialist MDTs networked with University Hospitals Oxford is an integral part of the job. There will be opportunities to develop practical skills relevant to haematology. Including bone marrow biopsy and the reporting of blood films and bone marrow aspirates for those that are interested. The post holder will participate in haematology outpatient clinics including a chemotherapy pre-assessment clinic.
